Abstract
The growth of the halal industry and digital media has driven the transformation of da'wah into the modern economic sphere, giving rise to fee-setting in preaching activities and sparking debate over the validity of the ijarah contract and the boundary between professionalism and the commercialisation of religion. This study analyses the practice of ijarah in contemporary da'wah and its relevance to the halal industry, using a qualitative, library-based research approach and drawing on fiqh literature, academic journals, classical texts, and regulations governing ijarah contracts. The findings reveal that the Shafi'i and Maliki schools of jurisprudence permit receiving ujrah for da'wah activities, provided it does not compromise sincerity. In contrast, the Hanafi and Hanbali schools tend to restrict or prohibit such remuneration. In the context of the modern halal industry, da'wah has undergone commodification through digital media, risking a shift in orientation from spiritual values to economic interests. Nevertheless, Islam permits compensation for da'wah services, provided religion is not exploited for commercial gain and the practice remains grounded in the ethics of da'wah and the principle of taqarrub to Allah SWT. This study underscores the importance of maintaining a balance between preacher professionalism, Sharia ethics, and spiritual values within the contemporary halal industry ecosystem.
